The ADL's current president is Abraham Foxman, a close friend of the ADL founder and long-time ADL director Abraham Kurzweil. So when the ADL's Ken Stern called Foxman, its current director, "one of the most respected men in the world," it is not surprising that he would jump to his feet and rise to his feet to accept. Stern was in Washington last week to launch a new project on the Holocaust sponsored by Columbia University and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. The project, titled "Hidden Voices," will focus on the survivors of the genocide who survived in hiding and are not yet honored for their courage by Israel, Columbia, or other institutions. In its two-year history, the project has resulted in the publication of 16 books, and in 2004, the ADL co-sponsored a show about the Holocaust in Los Angeles, to which the project donated $300,000. The project was set up by Dina Goodman, a psychiatrist who had studied the survivors of the Holocaust and "came to realize that too many of the survivors were being forgotten," Stern said in an interview in his office at the ADL's New York headquarters. "That's when she came to me and said, 'I want to help change that,'" Stern said. "What struck me was that they were lost people, not homeless people, not homeless people," said Stern, who joined the ADL in 1994. "They had lost their families, some of them had lost their homes, they were homeless." "I said, 'This is a great cause, but I don't know if I can do it, it will be a huge project,' but she kept coming back to me, saying, 'I want to do it, I want to do it.' She said, 'I'm going to have to do it without you,' but I said, 'I can help.'
